How to Make a Pouf? Diy Wooden Bed Pouf
The space-saving idea par excellence: this comfortable do-it-yourself ottoman, two meters long and 80 centimeters wide, that few gestures reduce to a healthy 800 × 750 mm footrest ottoman, high thirty, mobile on wheels (it is also perfect as a seat). The creation of the do-it-yourself bed pouf, because of the joints obtained from the strips. It requires a certain mastery of woodworking and a lot of precision both in cutting the pieces and in assembling the four elements of the piece of furniture.
How to make a pouf?
The single bed pouf is made of fir strips and poplar plywood; beech and birch plywood would guarantee better strength and durability of the joints. Even the sizes and dimensions of the pouf bed shown in the material list are purely indicative: to shorten it and tighten it or vice versa, it is enough to cut more or less long strips and plywood panels. Keep in mind that the width of the strips that form the foot must be equal to the height of the wheels.
The piece of furniture wraps around and unfolds like a hedgehog. Bring it from the footrest (1) to the bed (3), it is sufficient to lift the pillow which (2) is pulled behind the tail of the bed which hung against its back. It turned out, the bed rests on the four wheels of the bedside part, on the sides that house the pillow and on the feet hinged to the final element visible, still folded, in the second photo. The front openings can easily be covered with sheets sewn to the pillow, weighed down with sinkers.
The do-it-yourself bed pouf is practically wrapped and unfolds like a hedgehog: to bring it from the footstool function to the bed, it is enough to lift the pillow that is pulled behind the tail of the bed that hung leaning against its back. It turned out, the pouf bed rests on the four wheels of the bedside part, on the sides that house the pillow and on the feet hinged to the final element. The front openings can easily be covered by sheets sewn to the pillow, weighed down with sinkers.
What you need to build a do-it-yourself bed pouf
- Saw for straight and team cuts; jigsaw; drill; milling machine; sander; knife or scissors for synthetic sponge; possibly sewing machine; finishing tools.
- Strip section 25 × 70 mm (preferably made of hard and elastic wood): 1 piece (A) of 800 mm, 2 (C) of 780 mm, 2 (D) of 810 mm, 2 (E) of 360 mm, 2 (F) from 200 mm, 2 (G) from 230 mm.
- 17.5 mm x 70 mm section: 4 pieces (B) of 800 mm.
- 10 mm plywood: 2 pieces of 350 × 690 mm, 2 of 750 × 690 mm.
- Synthetic sponge 60 mm thick: 1 mattress 800 × 1950 mm.
- 1 pillow 800x 700 mm.
- 4 swivel castors with 70 mm high plate connection.
- 6 round head bolts with M8x80 mm square, with nuts and washers.
- 2 folding hinges 50 × 70 mm.
- Sponge-covering fabric, to size.
- Strap or other cushion fixing system.
How to make the pouf bed joints?
The pouf bed is composed of back, head, intermediate, cushion, and tail. The back is made up of a piece A, and of pieces G joined together by wood or, better still, tenon and mortise, to create a C-shaped frame in which two pairs of pins are inserted. For the head, the two pieces C, two pieces B and a large multilayer mirror are needed. In the inner edge of the pieces, C a milling groove (10) 10 and 15 mm deep is milled (1) and opposite the male of the joint open the holes for the back pins. On the inner edge of the two pieces, B a ledge 15 mm wide and 10 mm deep is milled and their ends taper to 10 mm for a length of 70. Glued and locked withspinette or gruppini first the mirror inside the grooves (2) and then the pieces B in the quarries of those C, one mount (3) the espalier (possibly closed by a third small multilayer mirror). The intermediate consists of the two slats E, and a small plywood mirror fixed as already seen. The cushion holder, identical to the headboard except for the use of the pieces D instead of the pieces C, is stiffened (4) by the two sides A. The tail, finally, consists of a small mirror closed between the two strips F, against which the external face is hinged to the feet, which, in stool position, must hang down.
Make the joints
The processing of the strips and in particular, the realization of the six joints is the most complex part of the work, the one that requires the greatest precision since the functionality of the bed pouf depends on it. To simplify the description, we indicate the various pieces with the letters that identify them in the material list. Begin by creating in a piece of pieces C and both ends of the pieces D the male, 25 mm wide and protruding 30, to be rounded (1) with the rasp and file. Immediately behind all the males and in the other end of the pieces, C is a quarry by wood in the lower face of the strips70 wide and 10 mm deep. The female is opened in both ends of the pieces E and one of the pieces F (2), to size. The joints are clamped squarely, which should be marked for subsequent assembly, opening the hole (3) through the pin, exactly centered. The insertion of the pin, locked with nut and washer (4), completes the joints. Insert the nut, the corners of the plywood mirrors of the intermediate and the tail are opened by a drain.
Twirled wheels for the bed
Under the four corners of the frame of the first element, just as many sturdy swivel castors with a plate connection are screwed, with a unitary capacity of no less than 20 kg. The height of the wheels determines that of the cushion stop strips and hinged feet. In the foreground (next to the wheel), one of the articulation joints of the elements, which allow the couch to transform.
