What to Research Before you Build your own Home
Building a home from scratch is a huge decision but it is one that more and mor people are making for various reasons. The main advantages of building your own home rather than buying one that is already built, is the ability to be able to choose not only the location but also the design of your home – so you can create exactly what you are looking for from a home and design it to be tailored to your needs.
Of course, before you go ahead and dive in there are lots of things that you should research before you do it to ensure that your build goes as smoothly as possible and you don’t get any nasty shocks later down the line.
Check out planning regulations in the local area – Speak to your local council and look at planning maps like this https://www.themapshop.co.uk/planning_maps_online.htm to make sure you have an idea of what you can and can’t do on the land in the area. You don’t want to get into a long struggle with planning permission!
Look at crime rates – Do research local crime rates – the data is available in all local authorities from the police and it is definitely something that you should take into account.
Schools -If you plan on having children in the future or you have children already, look at what schools will be in the catchment area of the house and look at Ofsted reports on the schools to check them out. You can also see if you can speak with the schools and the parents whose children go there to get a feel for them.
