How to Install an Electrical Panel

Everything related to the electrical service provided by the managers can be managed through an electrical panel, which is generally located at the entrance of your home or any commercial premises. It is a control unit in which fuses, differentials, switches and relays are installed inside and above all a series of keys that are used to section the system individually: in this way it is possible to carry out any repairs without necessarily having to lower the main switch lever. With the following steps of this guide, we will then see how to install an electrical panel. Before starting, it is important to specify that, although it is a rather simple operation, it is essential to have good knowledge of the subject, as well as excellent manual skills.

How to install an electrical panel?

You will need:

  • Electrical cabinet
  • Cables
  • Pliers
  • Scotch tape
  • Lifesaver

How to install an electrical panel

Secure the structure

To correctly install an electrical panel, as a first step, it is necessary to position and fix on the wall, using 4 plug screws, the special plastic structure that was supplied to us in the installation kit. Obviously, before closing the lid we must make the appropriate connections to the various types of levers and switches: only in this way, in fact, the electrical panel can be perfectly functional.

As we connect the various switches, it is recommended to apply a special adhesive to each of them: these should be supplied in the assembly kit of the electrical panel and are used to indicate the function of each individual element, for example, staircase lights or entrance lights.

Connect the cables

At this point you can start making the various connections to the power line of the electricity company, through the meter: the latter, generally, in modern houses is located outside. The main switch that controls the energy used by the circuits that are part of the electrical panel is easily recognizable, as it has two fairly thick black wires and is supported by two plastic handles, also black, joined together. Raising or lowering the handle activates or deactivates all circuits in one shot.

The main switch also serves to identify the amperage capacity of the electrical panel which is characterized by a number, generally 100 and 150, but it is good to know that increased meters are also available for powers exceeding 3000 KW (200 and 400). The aforementioned black wires feed at a voltage of 120 volts, which is necessary for the so-called? Electric bars? These are used to distribute the power to the various circuits of the electrical panel. It is important to know that by varying the bars from a numerical point of view, you will be able to determine the voltage xanax distribution, which, depending on your needs, varies between 120 Volts up to 240 Volts.

Apply the threads

To allow electricity to be sorted through the panel at the various powers expressed in volts, it is necessary to apply all the wires to the bar starting with the white neutral: this is used to power everything that is connected to a transformer and, for this reason, it is called neutral bar. The grounding wire must also be connected to the neutral bar by means of rods inserted in the ground, which take the name of puntazza, or by means of a metal tube.

Mount the circuit breaker

At this point, having completed the connections for the various branches, including the earthing one, there is nothing left to do but complete the work by applying the circuit breaker: this tool is of fundamental importance, both in a home and in any commercial premises or other business.

The lifesaver’s task, in fact, is to make any electrical contact cut off in the event of a short circuit of one or more branches of the system. It is good to know that depending on the type of system they vary in amperage, precisely because in this way they will be able to support any deficiencies of one or more sections of an electrical circuit, guaranteeing excellent safety.

This tool also belongs to an efficient fire-fighting system which in the past, when it did not exist, it has created many damages to houses, work activities and people. Today, in fact, so that every plant, both civil and industrial, must necessarily have a lifesaver, as by law decree it is mandatory (law 26/40).

Complete the installation

In the margin of the description of the assembly of an electrical panel, it must certainly be added that, in the presence of one or more sections to be powered, the junction boxes are available in different sizes. In addition, as the size increases, the possibility of hooking various light points such as a light bulb, an appliance or an air conditioner also increases.

In this case, it is necessary to know that, together with the electrical panel, bipolar switches must be positioned, which are available from 15 to 50 Ampere. As you may have understood, installing an electrical panel is a fairly simple and intuitive operation, however, if you do not have experience in this field at all, it will be useful to resort to a professional: an electrician will be able to do the job correctly and in a short time.

Consult the instruction manual of the device you purchase, as it may present some peculiarities compared to the standard models.

Thank you for the list of what we need to install a larger electrical panel in our home. We have outgrown our current one, which is nearly 50 years old. It is good to know that we will need to apply an adhesive to each of the switches. I am not sure that this was done the last time we helped someone. After looking at what we need, the time involved, and the details that further this task, we will probably call on an electrical panel installation professional this time.
